Decoupling PHP monolith into AWS lambda functions - Our journey

When Everymundo hit more than 50 airlines back in 2019, we needed to come up with solutions to better scale our systems, increase performance and reduce server costs. We started doing more background processes so the data was pre-aggregated when requested. We migrated many components of a monolithic PHP application to AWS lambda functions in NodeJS.

In this presentation, we will share our journey to the inclusion of AWS lambdas as part of our technology stack.The examples we bring are real life experiences and are in production systems that serve multiple regions and handle more than 4 million page requests per day.

When the lockdowns due to the pandemic hit, the travel industry was by far one of the most affected ones and consequently, we were affected too. So in order to keep going, we had to find opportunities to reduce costs and the usage of Kinesis with Lambda functions was a good one.

We are going to show you how the service works, what features it provides, the pricing formula, our solution to reduce the costs, the math behind it, and all the trade-offs for this solution.

Reactive WebSockets for Event-Driven Architecture

WebSockets is a lightweight and widely adopted client-server communication protocol. We’ll share our architectural solution on how to use WebSockets for an event-driven, production-ready, distributed microservices ecosystem built with Reactive Programming paradigm.

At Everymundo, real time data is at the center of many of our products. Being able to react to this information flow is very important and sometimes even vital.

Airline users access our systems from different devices through multiple sessions, this leads to inconsistencies when one of those sessions modifies the account information. These types of changes require the user to verify it’s credentials to make sure all active sessions are still valid.

The use of OAuth2 to handle the security comes with some caveats, the sessions are stateless and the information is stored in a time-limited token. For this reason, our team had to find a solution to react to this change and trigger a logout, if needed, of all the active user sessions. The usage of WebSockets technology has proven to be beneficial to provide the product and ultimately, the final user, with the latest events and data.
